This position requires direct patient care as part of dental student supervision. The supervising faculty is responsible for overseeing the student throughout the whole process of periodontal dental care. That includes initial patient assessment and diagnostic tests including assessment of gums, teeth, and supporting structures, measurement of gums and teeth, and diagnosis of type and severity of periodontal disease; non-surgical therapy such as scaling and root planning to remove plaque, tartar, and bacterial toxins from the tooth surfaces and root surfaces below the gumline; surgical therapy including procedures such as flap surgery, bone grafting, guided tissue regeneration, or soft tissue grafting; adjunctive therapies including use of antimicrobial agents, locally administered antibiotics, or host modulation therapy to enhance the effectiveness of periodontal treatment; and ongoing periodontal maintenance including regular professional cleanings and monitoring of periodontal stat
